Do the Strand!!! – Strand Theater, Kansas City – Refrigerated Adult Memories from The 60’s, Part One
The Strand Theater in Kansas City is still alive and kicking, and it has a history of being one of the better places for Adult Sin-ema. Although it opened up in 1917, it was showing Adult fare since around 1962. By the Mid 60’s, things were moving into the Rougher sides on a regular basis while the girls were appearing onstage with some of the most hilarious names ever (Elkie Sletzer!). Tonight I feel like just whipping up a collection of what I have and letting you enjoy it. Words will only spoil the effect although a few will be around. There’s a lot of wild flicks, Go Go Burlesque, fun, and Roughing it up!
1-21-66, with an ad for it’s competition, the Folly
2-18-66 – Tortured Females is on a DVD with Two Girls for a Madman and in Hot Blood. It was released originally through Mitam, who tried to go mainstream with a film that turned out to be The Thirsty Dead.
4-1-66 – Barry Mahon’s Ape Suit flick is on a nice DVD presented by Something Weird Video with Monster of Camp Sunshine.
7-8-66 – a Cutie classic presented by David F. Friedman.
10-10-66 – Of course, this is a meeting of the legends!
10-21-66 – Another Mitam film
5-5-67 – the classic Findlay film!
9-7-67 – Now with Underground Movies!!! This was a growing trend of the day. At this time, a Chicago theater known as the Town Underground turned into an Underground cinema for about a year before returning to Adult films. The Art Guild Chain was popularizing this – in my area, the Toledo cinema was the Westwood.
