Rough It Up! Roughie Hot Spot (and related) Ad Collection, Part 1
Back in the sleazy 60’s, many cities had that one theater that was the only spot in town (or at least one of two) that showed the infamous Adults Only flicks called the Roughie and it’s close cou-SIN, the Kinkie in a time when many Adults-only films were of the Cutie kind or the beloved imports shown at the Art theaters. Many of these places were the second level theaters that faced hard times and brought in the sensationalism needed to keep the place alive or just wanted to show something that no other theater would touch. Sometimes the shows would be livened up by something lighter, but there was a certain audience that wanted things a little more on the rough side that kept them regulars at these theaters.
By 1968 and the death of the Cutie scene, many other theaters would start picking up the pace by showing these nasty Adults Only flicks on a regular basis.
“The people that went to Grindhouses and Drive Ins, were in many cases the people that didn’t have that much money or maybe had some hard knocks in life…and they like to think that the world was filled with evil, depraved people.” – Joe Bob Briggs (Extra footage, Herschell Gordon Lewis: The Godfather of Gore).
11-4-64 – The Kids had The Beatles…WE HAD OLGA!
7-17-64 – Waiting for the next Olga, but at least the Vice Girls are around for your Roughie needs! Sadly, the Casino would reportedly close in 1966.
8-14-64, Youngstown, an extra ad that’s cool to have around. The Mahoning Follies was a long-standing Adult movie place that would close up around the Mid 80’s.
1-20-67, Chicago – The Plaza Art would operate until around Mid-1968.
3-29-68 – The Town will later go Porn for a short while before closing in 1973. Before this showing, it also had a year as an Underground Movie place featuring shows like Chelsea Girls in it’s Adults Only history.
5-31-68 – The actual title if Prostitutes Protective Society. Directed by Barry Mahon
6-14-68, Some Town action!
Back to Miami!
10-11-68 – The Roxy (I think owned by the legendary Leroy Griffith) is still running as a Adult place.
