Sunset Strip Riot from Forbidden, 1966

Olympic International was one of the many Exploitation movie companies with offices on the Sunset Strip, and it knew that something was going down around Nov. 18, 1966, so (I think) Lee Frost took his camera and filmed what was going on that fateful night.

As possibly expected from the company that featured Pro-War people at an Anti-Vietnam art show back in Mondo Bizarro, the narration is clearly from a very anti-Hip perspective, and the focus is clearly on the fighting and the Cops. Certainly a clip that made Mondo Mod’s segment of the same event look very bubblegum by comparison.

Forbidden was cited as a 1967 film, with a noted release mentioned in Boxoffice in May of that year. The lesser of Olympic’s “Mondo” films, it did have a couple of segments worthy of a best-of compilation, with this segment being a very stern look at youth culture fighting against authority.

The end of a legendary era started here.
